UN rights experts urge Nicaragua to stop repressing human rights defenders

UN human rights experts urged [press release] the government of Nicaragua Thursday to stop repressing voices that are critical of the government after “100 days of unrest in which at least 317 people have been killed and 1,830 injured.”

The experts stated that “[r]eports indicate that there has been an increase in targeted repression, criminalisation and alleged arbitrary detention, which is creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among different communities and among civil society representatives in the country.” They expressed opposition to this repression, and are worried that the repression will expand.

The experts “stressed the importance of the Government keeping a clear and up-to-date record of the names and locations of people who have been deprived of their liberty.” They also urged Nicaragua to stop criminalizing the practices of activists and to fully comply with its international human rights obligations.
